从事译学研究的必读书



了解翻译家，仅看他们的译品是不够的，必须阅读他们的著述，特别是他们怎样写自己的翻译生涯、思考、情趣和追求，也就是离不开施康强先生的自选集书名所说的“自说自话”。这套文丛书名和单卷书名的设计匠心独运，各有特色，寓意深邃，耐人寻味。文丛以“巴别塔”命名表示这一套书是从事崇高事业的通天塔建造者翻译家的文集，有别于一般作家的文集。单卷书名则各有着眼点：屠岸先生用《倾听人类灵魂的声音》、吕同六先生用《寂寞是一座桥》作书名以显示翻译家担负着沟通人类心声和在默默耕耘中架设中外文化交流桥梁的神圣使命，金圣华女士的文集《译道行》表示书中所展现的是“译家长年累月跋涉译途的实录和心迹”，董乐山先生的文集以《西行的足音》为书名意在再现作者“采撷西方文化精华的漫长里程”，方平先生的书名《他不知道自己是一个诗人》和刘靖之先生的书名《和谐的乐声》使读者联想到两位翻译家与诗、与音乐结有不解之缘，叶渭渠先生的书名《扶桑掇琐》显示作者的翻译与研究方向为日本文学、文化。

编辑的生活特点是什么？根据笔者的亲身经历，可以回答是：日复一日、年复一年同作者、同书稿打交道，为他人作嫁；目下还得增添一项活动内容：“跑市场”。作为曾经从事过多年翻译书出版工作的编辑，自然很想了解翻译家的生活特点是什么。这个问题以前没有认真思考过，书上也找不到现成的答案。读了这套文丛后深有感触地发现许多位资深翻译家的答案竟是不约而同的：寂寞。

从一百多年来的译介历史来看，中国对歌德的介绍和翻译都是出于一定历史时期的文化和文学建设的需要，不同时期对歌德文学世界的不同方面、不同角度的观照折射的是那一时期的社会状况、思想状况、文化状况和文学发展状况，正如杨武能先生所说：“歌德与中国，中国与歌德——西方与东方，东方与西方，在人类历史发展的进程中，两者走到了一起，产生了巨大的后果和深远的影响。不只是中德或者东西方的文化交流，还有中德两国的文学乃至社会思想的发展演变的历史，都或多或少地反映在了歌德与中国的相互关系中。”[7](P1)由此可见，翻译文学对中国现代文学现代性的生成与发展是有着巨大的推动作用的，我们只有在考察翻译文学与中国现代文学的密切关系中才能给它以历史的定位，是现代文学和文化的发展要求给了翻译文学必要的现实依据、历史依据和生存逻辑，抛开了现代文学这一重要的依附对象，翻译文学也就缺少了自己的栖身
